The increase comes as the Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department expands beginner routes ahead of peak summer heat. Parents cite shorter workweeks and school breaks as reasons more households seek outdoor time without traffic risks.
Named paths in the Mesilla Valley and East Mesa
The Tortugas Trail along the Rio Grande near Apodaca Park offers a flat 3.2-mile loop with shaded rest stops at mile markers one and two. Riders start at the park entrance on South Main Street and stay on the paved surface that avoids vehicle crossings until the return leg. Further east, the East Mesa Greenway connects the Sonoma Ranch neighborhood to the New Mexico State University perimeter trail, adding another 4.1 miles of separated bike lanes marked with family-speed signage installed in March 2025.
Both routes fall under the department’s Safe Routes to Parks initiative, which added lighting and water fountains at three stations last fall. The Southern New Mexico Bicycle Coalition maintains volunteer patrols on weekends to assist first-time riders with basic bike checks.
Usage data and program costs
Department figures released last month list 47 guided family rides held between January and June 2026, each capped at 35 participants. Helmet rentals cost $3 for the day at the Apodaca Park kiosk, while free loaner bikes are available on the first Saturday of each month through the coalition’s equipment exchange at the East Mesa trailhead. City traffic counts from 2025 recorded a 28 percent drop in minor incidents on these two corridors after barriers were widened to eight feet.
Parents planning a first ride can check the department website for daily temperature cutoffs and print maps that list exact distances between shade structures. Riders are advised to arrive before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to avoid midday heat on both the Tortugas and East Mesa segments.
